2012: A Look Back at Konami’s “Year of Silent Hill”

Love it or hate it, Silent Hill got a lot of action in 2012. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights, shall we?


  • Konami announces the release dates for the Silent Hill HD Collection (March 6), Silent Hill: Downpour(March 13) and Silent Hill: Book of Memories (March 27).


  • Konami kicks off their “Month of Horror” when Silent Hill HD Collection launches for PS3, and later in the month for XBox360. The new voice overs don’t bode well with fans.
  • Silent Hill: Book of Memories is pushed back out until the 4th Quarter, but the soundtrack is released as scheduled.
  • Silent Hill: Downpour launches for XBox360 & PS3 to mixed reviews. Its soundtrack also becomes available for purchase.



  • Konami acknowledges bugs in Downpour and HD Collection and announces that patches are in development.


  • I get to play Silent Hill: Book of Memories for the first time at E3. During the show, Konami announces a release date of October 2012.

Silent Hill Nurse Statues Unpainted


  • Fans get their first glimpse of Toy Munkey’s unpainted Red Pyramid Thing and Bobble Head Nurse statues at San Diego Comic Con.
  • Former 2K employee tweets, “RIP Vatra Games,” which leads to announcement that the company is “under review for closure.
  • Konami hosts a Silent Hill panel during SDCC, featuring a behind-the-scenes featurette of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Q&A w/ cast & crew as well as playable demos of Silent Hill: Book of Memories.


  • Konami releases a PS3  patch for Silent Hill HD Collection, and says that an XBox360 patch will follow shortly.

Silent Hill Band


  • The Silent Hill Band plays their first US show at SabotenCon in Arizona.
  • Fan film, Silent Hill: Anniversary premieres in Minneapolis, MN
  • Konami’s San Francisco Gamers Night – Silent Hill fans get to demo Book of Memories for the first time since Comic Con.
  • Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights opens with a Silent Hill Maze featuring nurses, Pyramid Head and the Bogeyman.

  • October 1st, My Silent Hill goes public, woo hoo!
  • ToyMunkey unveils painted Pyramid Head statue, pending approval.
  • Silent Hill: Anniversary is publicly launched on Machinima.
  • Silent Hill: Book of Memories gets a demo at the beginning of the month and launches near the end as a PSVita exclusive.
  • Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opens in U.S. Theaters Halloween weekend.
  • Konami reveals that Silent Hill HD XBox360 patch has been abandoned due to lack of funds.  They offer to exchange the game for those affected.
  • An XBox360  patch is released for Silent Hill: Downpour that will fix frame rate issues, save game bug and Homeless side mission.
  • The  Gallerie Chappe in Paris, France announces an exclusive showing of Masahiro Ito’s Silent Hill paintings to open in November.
  • On October 29th, composer Daniel Licht holds a Halloween concert in Los Angeles featuring live performances of tracks from Silent Hill: Downpour and Silent Hill: Book of Memories.
  • On October 30th, Silent Hill: Downpour becomes available for XBox360 Games on Demand.

  • Silent Hill: Downpour finally gets a patch for PS3.
  • The soundtrack for Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is released on iTunes and Amazon, pre-orders begin for physical copies.
  • Silent Hill: Revelation 3D director, Michael J. Bassett confirms via Twitter that there will be commentary for the DVD/Blu Ray.
  • Time Magazine names the original Silent Hill one of the top 100 video games of all time.
  • We got our first look at concept art for a Silent Hill: Downpour comic, as tweeted by IDW Publishing’s Tom Waltz.
  • The Silent Hill art exhibit opens at Galerie Chappe in Paris, featuring original artwork by Masahiro Ito.

  • Masahiro Ito’s box art for both ToyMunkey statues are revealed.
  • Universal Studios announces that Silent Hill: Revelation 3D will be available February 13th for DVD, Blu Ray & 3D Blu Ray.
  • In its final issue, Nintendo Power names Silent Hill: Shattered Memories among its top 5 best video game endings.
  • Likewise, the unobstructed cover art for Japan’s Silent Hill: Downpour is released by the Japanese Silent Hill Facebook page.
  • Fan, Jose Andres Guzman of Silent Hill Universe releases a playable demo for his tribute game, Silent Hill: Rebirth.

Whew! Did I miss anything, Hill Heads? Throughout the year we saw teasers and screenshots and trailers for all, but these were the really memorable moments from 2012.

    You missed when Konami canceled the XBOX 360 patch for Silent Hill HD collection and offered refunds to anyone who bought the game.

    That’s under October. 🙂 Although they never offered refunds, just exchanges for a game on their list. I didn’t opt in for that after all because all I wanted was a straight exchange for the PS3 version and they didn’t have it.
